Before the update, local listings were shown in packs of 3, 5 or 7, meaning that more local businesses had a chance to squeeze in to the first search results page, even if they didn’t perform well organically. A move to 3-pack listings obviously makes competition for page-one listings even harder.

So if you look at the statistics of search, you will see that online searches lead directly to offline purchases. 84% of consumers who conducted a local search on their smartphone, visited a store within a day.  People are more savvy now and check things out online before coming in.

Half of all local mobile searches are looking for business information. A key piece of business information is your local address. You need to be ranked on Google and also on Google maps.

Here is an amazing stat. 87% of smartphone owners use a search engine at least once a day.  And with Google dominating that sector, you need to be found on Google. But don’t stop there, you should also be looking at Bing and some of the other search engines, depending on your target customer.

71% of people surveyed said that they look up the location of a business before going to the place to shop, dine or do other business.  In the old days, we used the Yellow pages. Today’s generation uses smartphones. Back in the day, if your business wasn’t in the Yellow Pages, you were doomed.  Today? Well you guessed it.

And finally, 86% of people surveyed found the location of a business on Google Maps. Not surprising given how we all use Google maps (or sometimes Waze, which is owned by Google) to find our way around.

What Does this all mean?

Most small businesses are locally owned and operated, so they can take advantage of local SEO. Local SEO operates on a separate algorithm, producing three relevant results that cater to a user’s query, based on the user’s location. Google then selects the three most relevant local businesses for a given query and lists their names and options for directions, websites, and a direct call. Your small business has a good chance of getting listed here provided the correct keywords have been optimized and local citations and reviews are in order.

As a small business, you can adjust your strategy as often as you wish, experimenting all the time and trying out new strategies. This gives a small business far more potential for growth. Large businesses have a major advantage due to name recognition and reputation for landmark keywords and general areas of specialty. It also means they have less flexibility to maneuver when it comes to ongoing experimentation.

When customers go to a large corporation website, in most cases, they are looking for a specific product. However, when they find a unique local business, they may be more intrigued. A smaller brand can build very strong positive associations with a smaller audience, but you do not need to market as many or as fast or as directly as a big brand needs to.
